Pvt. Exekial Brashear SCV Camp #2139

Ezekiel Brashear's tombstone

Our SCV Camp was named after Private Ezekial Brashear Private Co B 10th Ky Mounted Rifles. Ezekial enlisted in the 10th Ky Mounted Rifles on Sept 12,1862 at Brashearsville. Ezekial was killed at the 2nd Battle of Cynthiana in 1864. General John Hunt Morgan ordered Ezekial's body transported home by horseback out of respect for the great bravery he had demonstrated in battle. Local legend has it that after he was buried a troop of Union soldiers dug up his body and threw it in the creek. He was reburied in the Branson Cemetery at the mouth of Pratt Fork in Letcher County Ky. It is located off KY Hwy 7, approximately one mile above Blackey. Interestingly, his original tombstone is still in place and is marked in a code which no one has yet deciphered.

We chose to honor this man by naming a Camp in his honor and basing the Camp on the site where he enlisted. As we work to rebuild Brashearsville and build the Leatherwood Reenactment we hope that our efforts will bring the attention and honor that men like Pvt. Ezekial Brashear so dearly deserve.

Our plans for the Camp include a scholarship fund, a battlefield monument listing the the names of the men from both sides who fought in the Battle of Leatherwood and many other projects which will allow us to be involved with the Cornettsville Community and the reconstruction of Brashearsville.

Kindest Regards,
Commander John Back
